A Guide to Wallpaper Brushes and Wallpaper Rollers

Although you might hear wallpaper referred to as an art by some people, it isn’t a skill that takes years to develop. There’s no reason why you can’t do a good job of it on your first attempt. All you need is a bit of common sense, attention to detail, and the right tools. This means wallpaper brushes and rollers. Today we’re going to take you through how to choose the right ones.

Wallpaper Brushes

There are many different shapes and sizes of wallpaper brush, so it’s important to get the correct one for your needs. First it’s important to note that wallpaper brushes and paint brushes are not the same thing. Wallpaper brushes tend to have softer bristles so that they can be used to brush wallpaper adhesive on to the back of lining paper or wallpaper in an even way, without damaging the wallpaper. Using a paint brush makes it less likely that the adhesive will be evenly spread – which can leave lumps that show through when the wallpaper is hung. The firmer bristles can also cause damage to the wallpaper itself.

There are two types of brushes for wallpaper. The first, we have already mentioned, is used to apply adhesive to the wallpaper. But a second kind, with even softer fibre bristles, are designed to smooth wallpaper when it’s on the wall, to remove air bubbles that form behind the wallpaper while it is drying.

Wallpaper Rollers

Rollers can be used as an alternative to wallpaper brushes. It works in much the same way to apply a thin, even layer of wallpaper paste to the wallpaper or even directly on to the wall. Different sizes of wallpaper rollers are available. Larger sizes are perfect for spreading paste across walls, while smaller ones are better when you need more precision, such as when hanging wallpaper borders to adding extra adhesive to the edges or corners of a room.

What to look out for when buying wallpaper rollers and brushes

  1. Quality – The purpose of using a wallpaper brush or roller is to make sure it spreads the adhesive uniformly. You also don’t want one that will shed bristles in the process. So it’s worth investing in a good quality brush. They will also be easy to clean and suitable for more resuse.
  2. Price – Wallpaper brushes and rollers will come at various different prices. Usually the price will translate to the quality of the product, so we’d recommend choosing at least a mid-range priced brush.
