Soundproofing the Nursery

One Thing Many New Parents Forget – Soundproofing the Nursery

All expectant parents have concerns about the health and happiness of their baby. In the run up to the birth, parents focus on buying everything from cots through to nappies but one of the last elements to happen is usually the decoration of the nursery. With many being too superstitious to do this very far in advance, time is often short when it comes to decorating, especially with such an important deadline looming, not to mention one which could happen early! One factor that is vitally important for both you and you’re baby and that is often overlooked is soundproofing walls.

Why Does the Nursery Need Soundproofing?
Sleep is an important part of the growth and development of your baby and, as any new parent will tell you, routine is vital – especially when it comes to sleeping. For unsettled babies, it can often take parents hours to get them to sleep. After rocking and singing and tiptoeing out of the room, the last thing you want is for a loud noise outside or next door to wake them up – starting the entire process all over again.

Soundproofing walls is therefore really important in not only ensuring that your baby has a good sleep but that you do too. After all you’re going to need all your energy to keep up with the constant demands of the new addition to your household.

What is Soundproof Wallpaper
DIY soundproofing is now a far cry for the egg-boxed walls of the 70s. Many companies now produce specially designed sound proof wallpapers which are easy to apply and perfectly suitable for use in a Nursery.

Soundproof wallpaper is made up of a series of layers. The first is usually a layer of lining paper and is the section you apply paste to. This is followed by a layer of foam which varies in thickness depending on the brand of soundproof wallpaper you use – Saarpor Latex Sound Proof Wallpaper for example is 5mm thick. The wallpaper is then finished with a thick lining paper which can then be either painted or wallpapered over.

It is the foam layer that helps with soundproofing. It effectively blocks external noise from penetrating the room whether its background traffic noise, a television set in the other room or just noise from neighbours.

Which Walls Should It Be Applied To?
Ideally you should apply sound proof wallpaper like Saarpor Sound Proof Insulating Liner to all the walls in the Nursery ensuring that both external noise and the noise from inside your home are blocked out. This will ensure that your baby isn’t disturbed by unavoidable things like flushing the toilet or opening the front room.

So when you are considering decorating the Nursery ready for your baby’s arrival, make sure that you not only consider the colour and the layout of the room but also the fundamentals like sound proofing for an all-round more enjoyable childhood.

Solving the problem of noisy neighbours

More and more people are living in cities often in close quarters in houses split up into flats, and apartment blocks. Although people often move to cities partly for the social aspects, this way of living can cause tensions. There’s been a big rise in the number of neighbour complaints about excessive noise. This might also have something to do with the increased means of making noise that are available to us. It used to just be dinner parties and babies that caused excess noise. Now most homes are fitted with hifis, large TVs, home cinemas and all sorts of potentially noisy pieces of tech. So in the face of the mounting cacophony, let’s have a look at some sound proofing options available to you.

Option #1 – Specialist Wall Soundproofing

Soundproofing has been around for many years in buildings like recording studios. They are fitted with specialist insulated wall coverings to make sure noise produced outside the room does not get inside and make its way onto the recording. They also trap the sound produced inside the room which creates a better sounding recording, and cancel out any background noise. It is possible to have the same technology installed at home. But sound proofing your home this way is very expensive and is a major job.

Option #2 – Egg Boxes If you want to get really DIY then there’s always egg boxes. They’ve been used by many a parent to drown out the sound made by their teenage offspring band. They are super low budget and do actually work by trapping the sound waves. Although it’s effective it’s hardly attractive, and it can take up a lot of wall space, reducing the size of the room.

Option #3 – Soundproof Wall Liners If you don’t want to dish out for full on soundproofing, but fancy something more aesthetically pleasing than good old egg boxes, then there’s now the perfect product for you. Saarpor produce a range of specialist wall covering. Their Latex Sound Proof Wall Liner provides sound insulation for walls via a latex foam that is laminated to a non-woven fabric. They also produce Sound Proof Insulation Paper. This is like ordinary lining paper but has 6mm of absorbing foam attached to it. Both are very effective at soundproofing walls and can also be used for insulating ceilings.

Stay ahead of the fashion pack with Debona Wallpaper

Interior design is just like fashion when it comes to new trends. They change with the seasons and something that’s popular now will be considered out of date in 3 months time. So it can be difficult to make a decision when it comes to choosing a wallpaper. You want to give your house a more on trend look, but you don’t want to go for something that’ll look our of fashion in a few months time. Well the solution could well come in the form of Debona wallpaper. Their designs are timelessly stylish rather than of the moment trendy so they’ll look good now and next year.

The Pattern That Never Dies – Hands down the most popular design of all time has to be stripes. They have rarely gone out of fashion and there’s good reason for this – They simply allow you to feature multiple colours, and you can vary the stripe thicknesses to give bolder or more subtle looks.

Timeless shades of pink and silver which are popular all year round and finally a subtle lime green which is very fashionable at the moment but not so bright that it will dominate the design. This design would look just great in living rooms, bedrooms or studies.

Timeless Elegance – Damask has been around for over a thousand years. So you can’t get much more timeless than that. The detailed nature of the patterns makes them suitable for creating a feature wall, and they can equally work across a whole room. Colours are really important if you want a timeless feel. From the current range of Debona patterns the black, white and grey seems well suited to this. These shades rarely go out of fashion.

Mix and match styles – Although it might take a little getting your head around, going for a style from the past that mismatches with the style of your house can actually give it a timeless feel. A twenties art deco or seventies brown and beige design in a really modern home will create a striking feel. There are plenty for the former available in Debona’s Art Deco range. Our advice is to stick to bigger, bolder patterns if you want them to feel fashionable for longer.

New! Wallrock KV600 Thermal Liner

It’s made from 4mm thick polystyrene permeated with graphite crystals, which is bonded to a high quality non-woven lining paper. The graphite crystals reflect heat back into the room and prevent it escaping through walls and ceilings.

Insulating Lining Paper

Another Saarpor product, this Insulating Lining Paper offers a very economical way to provide a moderate level of thermal insulation to your home. At 4mm it’s double the thickness of traditional polystyrene veneers and it also comes with a high grade non-woven lining paper laminated to it.

Wallrock R300 Liner & Wallrock Cosy Liner

The thermal insulation material is bonded to lining paper and it delivers a moderate to basic level of heat and sound insulation. A good choice when you want an insulating lining paper that is not too thick.

Heatsaver Polystyrene Insulation 2mm

Our Polystyrene Veneer provides a basic level of thermal insulation at a budget price. It consists of 2mm of polystyrene and comes in 10 metre length rolls. This product does not come with a pre-bonded lining paper, so a separate lining paper over the top is required. (We recommend using a non-woven lining paper such as Wallrock Fibreliner).

Fibre Lining Paper: The Facts

Unless you’re a DIY nut, it’s hard to keep up with developments in tools to help with wall preparation, wall coverings and paint. There have been a number of new developments recently, like thermal lining paper, metallic and glitter wallpaper, eco-friendly paint and wallpaper and mould resistant paint. So lets take this opportunity to talk about one of the most popular new products on the market – fibre lining paper.

What’s Fibre Lining Paper?

Fibre Lining Paper, also known as fibreliner, is designed to be used on your walls to prepare them for wallpapering. Generally, they’re made from a wood pulp containing short fibres of wood that are compacted together to make a strong paper. When this is applied to the walls of your home, the lining paper helps to smooth the walls and will form a strong bond to wallpaper, keeping it in place.

Which Brands Produce Fibre Lining Paper?

One of the most popular brands that offer fibre lining paper is Wallrock Fibre Liner, also known as Wallrock Fibreliner. What’s particularly good about this is that it’s made from paper that has been sourced from sustainable forests, so it is an environmentally friendly product.

Wallrock Fibre Lining Paper is also resistant to peeling, which can be an issue with other lining papers. This is because, unlike most fibreliners which are made from short fibre wood pulp, Wallrock Fibre Liner is made from long fibre pulp, making it more flexible. So as walls move slightly, as they do in all homes, the lining paper moves with them without splitting or tearing. This makes using Wallrock Fibre Liner the financially sensible thing to do as it should stay in place for longer.

What Are Common Fibre Lining Paper Uses?

Fibre lining paper can be used on ceilings as well as most walls. It can be used in bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, studies and under wallpaper in the bathroom and kitchen as well. It’s quite durable so it can be used in high traffic areas like hallways and stairs too. Fibre liners can be used instead of thermal liners in homes where heat loss is not a special problem.

You might expect Wallrock Fibreliner to be more expensive given it’s increased durability and long lasting nature, but it’s actually very affordable and where you consider the need to repeat purchase and re-apply cheaper alternatives it’s actually very good value for money.

Zinsser Primer and Sealers 101

Zinsser has been a staple of the DIY industry for many years, building up a reputation for designing tools that have helped people tackle any number of decorating problems. Below we have a look at their primers and sealers and show how they can be of help to you.

Zinsser Primer – There are a whole range of products that are designed to prep walls, ceilings, tiles and other surfaces for treatment or decoration. Collectively they are referred to as primers. Zinsser manufactures a range of primers which do different jobs.

Zinsser Cover Stain Primer – Primer that’s intended to work on surfaces stained with water marks, nicotine, graffiti, rust or mildew stains. If these surfaces are painted directly, the stains will probably show through the paint or leach into wallpaper, causing blemishes.

Zinsser Peel Stop Primer – This is specially designed for use on flaking, cracked or peeling paint. It will create a smooth and flat surface that is ready to take another layer of paint over the top. As well as working on plaster, wood, cement and metal surfaces in the home, Peel Stop Primer can also be used on external surfaces.

Zinsser BullsEye 123 Primer – This can be used inside and outside where damp is causing a problem, typically in laundry rooms, bathrooms and kitchens. Unlike some damp or mould remedies, it is non-toxic. It seals stains caused by mould so that they don’t leach into future layers of paint or wallpaper. It also works to prevent future mould growth.

Zinsser BullsEye 123 Plus Primer – A stronger version of the above. This is for use on pretty much any surface affected by mould and will seal in mildew and water to make the surface ready for painting or wallpapering.

Zinsser Sealants – As well as the range of primers, Zinsser also sell Zinsser Grandz, a specialist sealer and bond coat which is designed for use on porous surfaces like plaster, plasterboard, wallpaper, lining paper or filler to create a smooth surface that’s ready for painting.

When it comes to home decorating, preparation is key. So use the Zinsser primer or sealer that’s right for your home to make sure you get a professional looking end result.

But current brand leaders like Erfurt Mav have developed longer lasting wallpapers for all sorts of purposes. Their Wallrock wallpaper range is what we will look at today.

Erfurt Mav Wallrock Lining Papers – In addition to Erfurt Wallrock wallpaper, you can also get Wallrock lining paper. There are a number of liners of different thicknesses contained in their Premium range, all designed to smooth over irregularities in walls. There are also specialized thermal liners that don’t just smooth walls, they also prevent heat escaping through the wall. Wallrock sell standard thermal lining paper and a thicker KV600 thermal liner. Both of them will help you save money on your energy bits if you apply them to the walls in your home. They also have the added benefit of being damp and mould resistant. There is a third thermal liner on offer from Wallrock, R300 Liner. This also provides sound insulation, preventing sound from travelling into or out of a room.

Other specialist lining papers from Wallrock include Fibreliner and Fibreliner Plus, which are designed to smooth over plastering imperfections to prepare walls for painting or wallpapering.

Erfurt Mav Wall Coverings – A range of Erfurt wallpaper and other wall coverings are also available. If you want a textured wallpaper effect that can stand up to heavy traffic then take a look at the Wallrock Texture range. Perfect for hallways, landings and kitchens. Designs range from randomized patterns to more traditional embossed designs. For a more lightly textured look, see the Wallrock Trend range. Both of these Erfurt Mav wallpaper ranges will allow paint to take to them easily so you can create your personalized finished look.

Whichever Erfurt Mav wall covering you opt for, you can be assured it will be high quality, easy to apply to your walls, and will stay there.

Turn the volume down by soundproofing walls

We love them but kids can certainly be noisy. First it’s crying babys, then toddlers with their tantrums, as they grow there’ll be the sound of them and their school friends, and don’t expect it to get any quieter when they reach teenage years. Then you’ll have to grapple with loud music, slammed doors and maybe even a band rehearsal. If you have, or are thinking about having, children then it might also be time to think about soundproofing your home.

What is sound proofing?

Soundproofing is about stopping sound escaping the room it’s coming from, and also about bouncing it back in a way that creates better acoustics. In the past, soundproofing has been a very expensive process, but now thanks to new specialist wall coverings you can soundproof your home yourself at a fraction of the cost.

How it works – When you think of soundproofing, you probably think of filling hollow walls. But when we talk about soundproofing walls what we have in mind is very similar to wallpapering them. For instance Sound Proof Insulation Liner from Saarpoor is designed specially for sound proofing your home. It comes in rolls just like wallpaper and is just 6mm thick but gives as much sound insulation as 10cm of concrete. It works simply by being made with a sound absorbing foam that’s laminated with thick lining paper.

Where can it be used? What’s great about soundproof wall paper is that you can use it on any wall in your home. So no more noise from the tots in the nursery or bother from the teens bedroom with their loud music.

There are all sorts of uses from sound insulating wall papers – it can even be used on ceilings. So get some today for more of the quiet life!
