Soundproofing the Nursery

One Thing Many New Parents Forget – Soundproofing the Nursery

All expectant parents have concerns about the health and happiness of their baby. In the run up to the birth, parents focus on buying everything from cots through to nappies but one of the last elements to happen is usually the decoration of the nursery. With many being too superstitious to do this very far in advance, time is often short when it comes to decorating, especially with such an important deadline looming, not to mention one which could happen early! One factor that is vitally important for both you and you’re baby and that is often overlooked is soundproofing walls.

Why Does the Nursery Need Soundproofing?
Sleep is an important part of the growth and development of your baby and, as any new parent will tell you, routine is vital – especially when it comes to sleeping. For unsettled babies, it can often take parents hours to get them to sleep. After rocking and singing and tiptoeing out of the room, the last thing you want is for a loud noise outside or next door to wake them up – starting the entire process all over again.

Soundproofing walls is therefore really important in not only ensuring that your baby has a good sleep but that you do too. After all you’re going to need all your energy to keep up with the constant demands of the new addition to your household.

What is Soundproof Wallpaper
DIY soundproofing is now a far cry for the egg-boxed walls of the 70s. Many companies now produce specially designed sound proof wallpapers which are easy to apply and perfectly suitable for use in a Nursery.

Soundproof wallpaper is made up of a series of layers. The first is usually a layer of lining paper and is the section you apply paste to. This is followed by a layer of foam which varies in thickness depending on the brand of soundproof wallpaper you use – Saarpor Latex Sound Proof Wallpaper for example is 5mm thick. The wallpaper is then finished with a thick lining paper which can then be either painted or wallpapered over.

It is the foam layer that helps with soundproofing. It effectively blocks external noise from penetrating the room whether its background traffic noise, a television set in the other room or just noise from neighbours.

Which Walls Should It Be Applied To?
Ideally you should apply sound proof wallpaper like Saarpor Sound Proof Insulating Liner to all the walls in the Nursery ensuring that both external noise and the noise from inside your home are blocked out. This will ensure that your baby isn’t disturbed by unavoidable things like flushing the toilet or opening the front room.

So when you are considering decorating the Nursery ready for your baby’s arrival, make sure that you not only consider the colour and the layout of the room but also the fundamentals like sound proofing for an all-round more enjoyable childhood.

Keep damp walls under wraps using Damp Proof Wallpaper

Damp walls can have a serious effect on the livability of a home, and it’s a problem many houses in Britain suffer from. If your house was built before damp proofing was included as part of the construction, it will be especially at risk. But don’t worry, there are more ways than ever for dealing with damp. Below we look at how damp proof walls can be created using damp proof wallpaper.

The root causes of damp

Damp can be caused by a number of things. Moisture in the ground around the house can seep into the walls if it has nowhere else to go. Something like a blocked gutter can also cause water to stream down a wall when it rains. Moisture from within the house can also cause damp if it becomes trapped. One example of this is in bathrooms, if there is a lack of ventilation steam from a shower or bath will condense on the walls.

Solutions for dealing with it

Just as there can be different causes of damp, there are different ways of dealing with it which will depend entirely on the source of the damp. If the damp’s being caused by something like a blocked gutter than clearing the obstruction will probably sort it out. If it’s rising damp you’ll probably need to get a DPC (Damp Proofing Course) put into the affected walls. And if the source is internal, condensation not being able to escape, it may be best to deal with it by ventilated the room and using either damp proof lining paper or damp proof wallpaper.

Damp Proof Lining Paper

On the wall Damp Proof Lining Paper looks no different to regular lining paper – it’s outer layer is made from just that, and will smooth over any bumps and cracks on the wall. But it also contains a layer of foil which creates a damp resistant barrier that prevents moisture reaching the surface of the wall and developing into damp spots.

Damp Proof Wallpaper

This has a damp proof foil layer just like Damp Proof Lining paper, but its outer layer is wallpaper and is designed to provide the visible outer finish of your walls. There are a few different brands on the market, we recommend Andertons Damp Proof  Foil Paper.

You shouldn’t need to use both of these products as only one if needed to create a barrier against damp. Whichever you use, pair it with a regular liner or wallpaper

The latest home decorating trend – DIY Soundproofing

If you thought home decorating was about the art of style and colour, then there’s a new development that’s bringing science to redecorating a room.

Last year it was all about using lining paper and thermal liners to insulate their homes, this year the trend is for soundproofing your home.

This post takes a look at the reasons behind the trend, how the technology works and how to use it in your home.

Why people are choosing soundproofing

More and more of us are now living in built up urban areas where lots of people have audio and home cinema sound systems, loud kitchen appliances, or even just noisy kids! One thing is sure – our environment is getting noisier, whether it’s coming from outside or your own household.

No one likes having their quiet Sunday afternoons interrupted, or being woken up in the middle of the night – so people are turning to wall soundproofing in increasing numbers.

Where in your house should you soundproof?

It’s possible to soundproof any room in a home, but the most popular rooms for soundproofing walls are:

  1. The Living Room – Soundproofing your living room can have the double benefit of not only keeping noise out so you can watch TV in peace, but also to improve the quality of the sound from home cinema and audio systems.
  2. The bedroom – Nowhere is quiet more welcome than the bedroom. Get your forty winks in peace by keeping the sound out.
  3. The Study – Create a peaceful space to concentrate on work.
  4. Laundry Room – Keep the sound of a washing machine or tumble drier from spreading to the rest of the house.

How Soundproofing Walls works

Soundproof wallpaper is now the easiest way to soundproof a wall. It is usually constructed of layers of lining paper, insulating foam of varying thicknesses and a thick layer of wallpaper. This means it insulates against noise while still being as easy to hang as normal wallpaper.

So, if you’re getting interrupted by noisy neighbors next time you read a book, watch a film, or try to sleep, consider using soundproof wallpaper to restore domestic blis

Fibre Lining Paper: The Facts

Unless you’re a DIY nut, it’s hard to keep up with developments in tools to help with wall preparation, wall coverings and paint. There have been a number of new developments recently, like thermal lining paper, metallic and glitter wallpaper, eco-friendly paint and wallpaper and mould resistant paint. So lets take this opportunity to talk about one of the most popular new products on the market – fibre lining paper.

What’s Fibre Lining Paper?

Fibre Lining Paper, also known as fibreliner, is designed to be used on your walls to prepare them for wallpapering. Generally, they’re made from a wood pulp containing short fibres of wood that are compacted together to make a strong paper. When this is applied to the walls of your home, the lining paper helps to smooth the walls and will form a strong bond to wallpaper, keeping it in place.

Which Brands Produce Fibre Lining Paper?

One of the most popular brands that offer fibre lining paper is Wallrock Fibre Liner, also known as Wallrock Fibreliner. What’s particularly good about this is that it’s made from paper that has been sourced from sustainable forests, so it is an environmentally friendly product.

Wallrock Fibre Lining Paper is also resistant to peeling, which can be an issue with other lining papers. This is because, unlike most fibreliners which are made from short fibre wood pulp, Wallrock Fibre Liner is made from long fibre pulp, making it more flexible. So as walls move slightly, as they do in all homes, the lining paper moves with them without splitting or tearing. This makes using Wallrock Fibre Liner the financially sensible thing to do as it should stay in place for longer.

What Are Common Fibre Lining Paper Uses?

Fibre lining paper can be used on ceilings as well as most walls. It can be used in bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, studies and under wallpaper in the bathroom and kitchen as well. It’s quite durable so it can be used in high traffic areas like hallways and stairs too. Fibre liners can be used instead of thermal liners in homes where heat loss is not a special problem.

You might expect Wallrock Fibreliner to be more expensive given it’s increased durability and long lasting nature, but it’s actually very affordable and where you consider the need to repeat purchase and re-apply cheaper alternatives it’s actually very good value for money.

The Many Advantages of Lining Paper

As with many things, preparation is key when it comes to DIY – and especially when it comes to wallpapering. There’s nothing more irritating that having hung perfectly lined up wallpaper only to see bumps, bubbles or pits appear because on uneven plastering. Below we take a look at lining paper and how it can help you achieve better results when you wallpaper your home.

What is lining paper?

Think of lining paper as wallpaper that’s specifically designed to be applied to bare walls to prepare them for wallpapering. It is made from strong fibres so it’s typically more robust that outward facing wallpaper. This means it forms a flat layer over any imperfections in the wall. If you like to feel like you’re doing your bit for the environment, you can get lining paper that’s made from eco friendly fibres. These are typically the heaviest lining paper grades.

Advantages of using lining paper

Whatever type of lining paper you buy, there are always advantages over not using any at all. The primary reason people buy lining paper is to smooth the walls of the room you are redecorating. The lining paper will disguise small bumps, pits or cracks – the more imperfections there are, the thicker lining paper you should use. Another big advantage  is that it stops the wallpaper from shrinking. This is a common problem when wallpaper is applied directly to walls. It will expand as moisture is added to it in the form of wallpaper paste, then shrink again as it dries. This will lead to gaps between the wallpaper. Lining paper will hold the wallpaper in place at its expanded size. Thirdly, lining paper will stop hung wallpaper from peeling back. This is more common when cheaper wallpaper and adhesives have been used. These are the main points, but there are other added benefits to using lining paper such as added insulation.

So now you know how many advantages there are to using lining paper, you’ve got no excuse not to use it next time you redecorate!

Turn the volume down by soundproofing walls

We love them but kids can certainly be noisy. First it’s crying babys, then toddlers with their tantrums, as they grow there’ll be the sound of them and their school friends, and don’t expect it to get any quieter when they reach teenage years. Then you’ll have to grapple with loud music, slammed doors and maybe even a band rehearsal. If you have, or are thinking about having, children then it might also be time to think about soundproofing your home.

What is sound proofing?

Soundproofing is about stopping sound escaping the room it’s coming from, and also about bouncing it back in a way that creates better acoustics. In the past, soundproofing has been a very expensive process, but now thanks to new specialist wall coverings you can soundproof your home yourself at a fraction of the cost.

How it works – When you think of soundproofing, you probably think of filling hollow walls. But when we talk about soundproofing walls what we have in mind is very similar to wallpapering them. For instance Sound Proof Insulation Liner from Saarpoor is designed specially for sound proofing your home. It comes in rolls just like wallpaper and is just 6mm thick but gives as much sound insulation as 10cm of concrete. It works simply by being made with a sound absorbing foam that’s laminated with thick lining paper.

Where can it be used? What’s great about soundproof wall paper is that you can use it on any wall in your home. So no more noise from the tots in the nursery or bother from the teens bedroom with their loud music.

There are all sorts of uses from sound insulating wall papers – it can even be used on ceilings. So get some today for more of the quiet life!
